How are Enzymes Named? Nomenclature and Classification

Mostly, the name of enzymes consists of two parts:

  • The first part consists of the name of the substrate on which an enzyme works.
  • Second, the suffix ″ase″ is added to the name of the substrate.

Examples

Lipases, Hexokinase, etc. 

Enzymes are also named according to the reaction they catalyze.

Examples

Oxidases, reductases etc. 

Some names of enzymes are historical. They have no relationship to substrate or reaction type.

Examples

Pepsis, trypsin, etc.

Some enzymes are named according to the substances synthesized in a reaction.

Example

Rhodonase.
