The reaction in which one compound is broken down into two simpler substances is known as a decomposition reaction. This reaction is exactly the opposite of the combination reactions. Most of the decomposition reactions are endothermic but exceptions are also there. It is important to note that these reactions require energy to proceed, in the form of heat or light.

Thermal decomposition reactions

The decomposition reaction in which compounds are broken down in the presence of heat is known as the thermal decomposition reaction. Note that, heat provides energy for breaking the bonds and these reactions are mostly endothermic.

Electrolytic decomposition reactions

An electrolytic decomposition reaction is a reaction in which energy is provided in the form of electricity. For example, the decomposition of water. Here, the water molecule undergoes electrolysis to produce hydrogen and oxygen.

Photolytic decomposition reactions

The photolytic decomposition reaction is a reaction in which a compound is broken down in the presence of light.

When metal chlorates are heated. They decompose into metal chlorides and oxygen with intense emission of light.
